Chimney Rock

The Chapter was chartered in November 2004 to perform Fire safe work in the Chimney Rock area on Kingsbury Grade in Stateline Nevada.  A detailed survey by Resources Concepts Inc. found the densely forested Chimney Rock area to be the highest wildfire danger area on the Eastern slope of the Lake Tahoe Basin. Naturally, we were and are very concerned about doing all possible to make the area wildfire safe.

The Chapter currently has 178 members. In 2005/6, members contributed 1,954 hours of volunteer Fire Safe work and $11,095 of contracted Fire Safe work.  In addition, the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District contributed $10,000 and the Kingsbury General Improvement District contributed $2,500 in-kind fund for printing, mailing, etc. There were 1,333 trees removed, 768 over 6 inches in diameter and 575 trees less than 6 inches in diameter, and 87 tons of hazardous brush and limbs were chipped and either removed or spread on the properties.

The Board of Directors meets monthly on the third Thursday at 7:00 P.M. in the Kingsbury General Improvement District Office at 160 Pine Ridge off lower Kingsbury Grade.

The area contains 423 privately owned lots and over 50 government owned lots.  In 2005, we applied for and received grants, which let us get work completed on 53 lots at an average cost of $3,187 each.  The United States Forest Service also worked on a few lots.  This year we hope to complete 63 additional lots. The USFS is also treating 1,000 acres along Kingsbury, including federal land adjacent to the North and West perimeter of Chimney Rock.
