Galena II Chapter –Phase I Fuels Project 11-09-05
The Community Wildfire Risk/Hazard Assessment for Washoe County identifies the area in and around the communities of Galena as a high-risk rating. The plan identified the following recommendations for the area of Galena II:
- Homeowners provided for elements of defensible space around homes.
- Provide for community wide fuels reduction through the construction of shaded fuelhreaks.
- Develop a emergency evacuation plan for all Galena.
In order to meet the fuels reduction recommendations, the Nevada Fire Safe Council is providing the Galena II Chapter, $40,000 in cost share funding to complete the following fuels treatments:
- Construct four shaded fuelbreaks on community owned lands throughout Galena II.
- Develop a community fuels reduction site that will provide for homeowner generated fuels program through biomass grinding and removal.
- Provide for cheat grass abatement with the application of Plateau herbicide treatment of approximately 10 acres of shaded fuel break.
The cost share required for the grant will be $20,000, to be assessed through in-kind sweat equity documentation.
Scope of Work: Landowner consent forms will be required for participation in the fuels reduction project.
Piney Creek Circle - Common Area
- Masticate 1.2 acres, to be used for homeowner generated fuels removal program
Austrian Pine/Joy Lake Rd. – Hill Area
- Masticate and hand crew fuels treatment on approximately 15 acres of Galena II Common Area
- Plateau treatment for cheatgrass abatement
Yellow Pine Circle Common Area
- Masticate appreoximately 5 acres
- Plateau treatment for cheatgrass abatement
Piney Creek Parklet – Common Area
- Masticate and hand crew fuels treatment on approximately 10 acres of Galena II Common Area
- Plateau treatment for cheatgrass abatement
Total Acres: 31 acres

- Mastication $15,000
- Hand Crews $15,000
- Herbicide $2,000
- Biomass Removal $8,000
