Lake View Chapter Fuel Break - Phase I, II & III 11-04-05
Lake View has experienced two large fires of 1987 and the recent Waterfall Fire of 2004. Only during the 1987 fire were structures lost as the fire raced through and around the community. Lake View remains as a community rated as a high fire risk because of heavy fuel loading within and around the perimeter. Reseeding and reclamation was completed on the fire damaged lands around Lake View; however, particularly on south facing slopes cheat grass has invaded and choked out desirable perennial grasses and shrubs.
Scope of Work: Fuels reduction, reseeding and cheat grass herbicide treatment is required on three sides of Lake View. This project will be addressed through three phases of fuels treatments:
Phase I: A 200’ Fuel break is planned for the east side of Lake View Subdivision that will involve several parcels of private parcels and adjoining Weise property. The shaded fuel break will also be constructed with mastication equipment and crews removing up to 70% of hazardous fuel loading, primarily made up of large over-aged brush. A portion of the fuelbreak will also be treated with the herbicide, Plateau, and reseeded to remove a dense stand of cheat grass. The fuelbreak will be approximately 150’ to 200’ in width, with 30% shrubs remaining erosion control and habitat. Work to be completed will be restricted to mechanical equipment and crews mowing and thinning shrubs within 100 feet of houses.
Size: 27 acres
Cost: $25,000
Phase II: A 100 – 150’ fuelbreak is planned for the north side of Lake View Subdivision that will involve several parcels of private property and possible Carson City public land. The shaded fuel break will be constructed with mastication equipment and crews removing up to 70% of hazardous fuel loading, primarily made up of large over-aged brush. Work to be completed will be restricted to mechanical equipment and crews mowing and thinning shrubs within 100 feet of houses.
Size: 10.3 acres
Cost: $10,000
Phase III: Wildland fires of 1987 and the 2004 Waterfall Fire have impacted the south side of the community. This area was reseeded with perennial grasses; however dense stands of cheat grass are dominating many areas primarily on south facing slopes. A 250’ greenstrip is planned for the approximately ½ on the south side of the community. This greenstrip will be treated with Plateau herbicide and broadcast seeded with perennial grasses and forbs.
Size: 12.5 acres
Cost: $6,000
Total Project Costs = $41,000
