Pine Nut Creek Fire Safe Council Newsletter March 26, 2006                       BLM Update

Phase two of the BLM project to provide a fuel break along Pine Nut Road was completed last fall. Hand crews and a chipper were utilized to provide a fuel break along Pine Nut Road beyond the portion that was masticated in March/April 2005 (phase one). The cooperation we have experienced with the Carson City Field Office of the BLM has been exceptional and the Pine Nut Creek Fire Safe Council wishes to extend a huge thank you to all personnel involved. These projects have greatly increased the fire safety for our community.

Defensible Space

Now is a great time to make sure that your property is as safe as possible for the upcoming fire season. Defensible space around any structures is necessary to allow fire fighters the opportunity to save structures. The cool temperatures and moist conditions from this winter’s storms make this an ideal time to clear away vegetation. Let’s all do our part for fire safety and make the tough job of the fire fighters easier.

Grant Update

The grant that was awarded to the Pine Nut Creek Fire Safe Council in 2005 allowed for fuels reduction on private land. Three members of our Pine Nut Creek Fire Safe Council took advantage of the opportunity. The thinning was accomplished with a masticator and hand crews. The hand crews did the majority of their work last

spring and returned this past fall the finish any work that the masticator could not accomplish. This work has greatly increased the fire safety of our community. We have enough money left from the grant to install two 10,000 gallon water tanks for fire suppression. These tanks will be installed underground and will be plumbed

to meet fire department specifications. The addition of these tanks will greatly increase the ability of the local fire departments to quickly fill their trucks without returning to town.  One tank will be installed at the City of Refuge and one at Lena Lane.  There is currently a third tank above ground along Pine Nut Road. Tank installation is expected to be completed by the end of April. All local fire departments will be notified of the location of the tanks.
